What are the benefits of rooting my phone? What will I lose when I do. Also I have some deleted pictures that I want back. I saw that the only way to recover them is to be rooted. Sorry noob here.

You'll get updates quicker than you would otherwise. You get access to a full range of apps that make your phone much more powerful than it is otherwise.

Re: pictures, I don't know about that; unlocking the bootloader will wipe everything that is not backed up by you.
