Why do so many task run when not being used. I can use a task killer and kill them all and in 5 sec., a bunch of tasks appear to be running.

You don't need a task killer on this phone. 2.2 does a good job of managing memory.

If you look at usage you'll see that most of those processes use little to no cpu, therefore no battery. They run just so they can launch faster if you need them.

I personally suggest not using a task killer. I'm not implying they are bad but I will certainly say that someone who does not understand android's memory management will quickly experience problems and the solution 99.9% of the time is going to be "remove task killer, reboot phone".
