So, Im running the newest software on my EVO 3D. I have some questions.
1)Is S-Off the same as rooting? If not, Whats the difference?
2) Does S-Off give you superuser access?
3)I really want to root, but I dont know if I should wait until after we get ICS, or Do it now. Should I wait?
4) When the update finally does come out, and My phone is rooted, will the phone still be rooted? Will the root clash with the software update and destroy my phone?
3)Is this root permanent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3jbZZWKwkY&feature=g-vrec)? Is I do wire method s-off, will it make it permanent if its not?

Thanks if you help, Sprint couldnt answer any of these. I waited there forever, 3 TIMES!

NUMBER 5 IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!

I'm no expert, but I've been reading up a little. I'll share what I think I know. :)

1&2) S-off is not the same as rooting. You can be rooted and have superuser access, but not have s-off. S-Off allows you to write to the secure area of the boot partition (or something like that). Not having S-off makes it more complex to flash certain ROMs, especially ICS based ROMs. There are workarounds to flash ICS ROMs without s-off, but like I said, it's more complex.

I assume you're on the latest stock software which means you have hboot 1.5. If you follow the unlocking instructions on the HTCdev site, you'll unlock your bootloader and will be able to get root, but you still won't have s-off. If you want s-off there's a process you have to go through where you temporarily brick your phone and then install an older version of the software which has hboot 1.4. With hboot 1.4 you can root and get s-off.

3) I don't know what to tell you. You have to decide for yourself. If you know for sure you want to root, right now we have methods that work. It's always possible that the ICS update will break those methods and you'll have to wait until devs figure out new methods.

4) If you're rooted your phone and flashed a custom ROM or a custom recovery you should NEVER accept an OTA update. You risk bricking your device. If you wait, the dev that made your ROM will usually update it with the new OTA stuff and you can reflash the new version of the custom ROM. If you have an unlocked/rooted device but you're still running the stock ROM and recovery, I've heard of people accepting OTA's but I still wouldn't recommend it. It will probably unroot you, and could cause other problems.

5) I didn't watch the whole video, but I think the htc unlock method and the downgrade/s-off method are both permanent.

Good luck. Do your research.

if it were me i would get s-off now, there may be a hboot update in the OTA that may lock the bootloader to where you cant get s-off until a new method arrives, let the Dev's siff through the OTA and remove all the unwanted or the garbage so to speak,
