S Pen Alternatives

Are there any alternatives to the S pen that are a little thicker and easier to use for lengthy note-taking? I picked up a Tab S3 to take notes for research interviews I'll be doing during a 3-week assignment. The S Pen isn't bad, but a slightly thicker pen would be a little easier to use.

There are active pens on eBay. Otherwise any stylus works, but not like the S-Pen. (The S-Pen interacts with an additional layer on the screen that other phones and tablets don't have. So a stylus doesn't have a button, and you can't store it in the device., pr have it trigger anything when it's removed, or too far from the device.)
