Sat phone down into wireless charger, and started preparing for going out tonight for dinner.
Removed phone to check messages, and placed phone on the couch. When I came back, I seen that my phone was on the floor. HOW did that happen, who knows? Without checking for anymore messages, I place my phone in my suit jacket and we left. In the car I put phone in Cars cell phone holder, and we went on out to our meeting place.

I checked messages again and then went to pull S pen out to write down a number from a couple we met at dinner.
Long a behold, no
S pen. Oh where, oh where has the little
S pen gone, oh where, oh where, can it be. No need to panic. I used my wife's and we continued which turned out to be a wonderful night.
Said our good bye's and to the car I went.
Looked everywhere in the car.
Returned to the garage and retraced steps back into the house. This led me to my man cave. Now, I know I didn't lose it there because the new wireless charger is by the couch. Dex is in the man cave now and I wasn't in the man cave all day.
However, I was by the couch when my phone was picked up off the floor.
Behold there lies the
S pen. It must have ejected itself under the couch after the short fall. It's a 1 in a million chance that the phone lands in such a way, that the S pen ejected just under the couch. Just the tip of the top was sticking out.
I was prepared to just order 2 new pens, just for safe keeping.

QUESTION,
Why didn't my phone after voice unlock show S pen was removed when I was at dinner?
Did Samsung miss something here?
If not mistaken, as soon as phone unlocked at dinner, it should of showed S pen mode.
Correct me if I missed something here.

My current fix, was to change to a louder notification, so that when the S pen is removed, or ejects itself after a fall, the sound is a much louder sound than the current one. I downloaded an mp3 file of a Light Saber powering on and off.
Also, ordered an extra pen anyway. What's a note without the S pen? An S8 plus? **lol
In settings, I found out, you can check when the last time
S PEN was removed.

Yes, I know it's a long post, but I'm just trying to help.
Stuff like this happens all the time.
Last week I dropped my phone and it slid about 8 feet, not a scratch on it.
Again, this could happen to anybody.
If there's another fix, please let me know.

How do you change the S-pen alarm noise? I'd like to make mine something REALLY annoying. I have already lost and found the pen twice.

Are you both saying that none of these things occurred when your s pen unwittingly came out:

Where in settings can I check when the last time spen was removed?

I test mine every once in a while to make sure it still works. My phone makes a noise with a pop up on screen reminding to put back my spen when I walk away from it.

that's strange the little round s pen symbol on the side of the phone should have noticed you the pen is in use or out

When my phone fell at home I didn't hear S pen eject. I never looked at my phone again until I was at dinner.

When I unlocked it, it didn't show S pen mode. It might of when it fell, but how would I have known that, since the sound it makes is quite low, even in max volume.
Plus I never looked at the screen until 40 minutes later when I needed it.

Agreed, but that wasn't there, at least after 40 minutes with screen back in lock mode and then unlocked again to use pen. No worries, my son will be here tomorrow. Settings are all correct.

There was a noise made when I simulated the scenario with my wife's phone.
Result,

After about 20 feet away from phone and 5 minutes later a notification came on her phone saying
S pen removed go to settings and it made a louder and different notification sound.

AHAH!!!
My phone didn't do this.
My son thinks I might have to do a full reset, since mom's is doing it and mine isn't.
My phone took a hard hit last week it may have screwed something up.
No worries it will be fixed tomorrow.

You know something? Now that I think about it, i had my note 5 spen left on my coffee table once and when I walked away it didn't notify me even tho I had the alarm setting turned on. I ended up turning off phone for a few, then turned phone back on and didn't have the problem since. Haven't had that issue yet with my note8. And I'm glad you getting it fixed tomorrow:)

Done everything but full reset. Fired up my moto 5 G plus.
My note 8 will be just fine. Thank you.
My Huawei mate 10 PRO should be here Tuesday, can't wait.
God bless you all

The fix was a
[full reset.] My phone took a hard fall last week and somehow this screwed with the S pen connected software.
Back up S pen will be here Tuesday just in case. Phone is working beautifully.
But now when I pull the S pen it sounds like a loud light saber powering on. When I'm away with pen from phone about 20 feet, I get a notification sound to check for the S pen settings on the screen.
Great!!!
A person is nothing without their S pen.
Hey, I sound like
Iron man. Lol
Thanks everyone for help and interest.
God bless you all.

My S Pen alarm does not work. What does a full reset involve? Do I have to re-enter everything such as passwords etc.? How do you do a reset please?

my S-pen alarm does work. Notified me thrice before I checked it.

The only problem I found is that the notification doesn't come to my gear watch. That would have made it perfect.

Settings:
Reset and back up
Make sure you have your phone backed up in the Samsung Cloud.
Suggestion call your carrier.
Passwords you should know the only ones you need to remember are your Samsung Account and Google account.

Wait!!!
Check settings first
For S pen
First you have to back up your phone, in Samsung Cloud.

But before you do this go to,
>Settings
>Advanced Features
>S pen Manage settings

Screen should look like this
