S20+ vs. S7

So, I'm on Verizon and my S7 Edge has served me extremely well for the past 4 years. Hard to believe it's been that long. It's only a little laggy at times and still ends the day with about 40% battery, as I'm not a heavy user.

I could do just fine with it for another year, but I've been waiting to upgrade for a 5G capable phone and I'm wondering if the S20+ is good enough to get me off the fence. The S20 isn't due out on Verizon until sometime in Q2, so that's not an option. I like one-handed operability, which makes me shy away from the Ultra, but is the Plus also too big? Or, given the nascent state of 5G, am I better waiting a year? Any thoughts appreciated!

Ouch. I hated the S7! Worst smartphone that I ever owned! Since you went that long and don't seem to be a all out power user I think an S10 at a cheaper price would suit you VERY well. The S10 is currently my all time favorite phone AND it having a year worth of updates is very polished on the software side and appears will get another OS upgrade next year. Don't worry about 5g, I've been consistently getting much faster speeds on LTE plus it can already stream 4k what more do you need?

Right now 5G is somewhat irrelevant though that may change the timeframe is uncertain. Given your track record of keeping a phone it's a tough call unless you are willing to upgrade sooner should 5G become more prevalent.

Get the S10e, I loved that phone the most. It has a reliable fingerprint scanner on the side, is very cheap and is a big upgrade for you. I have the S20+ now and to be honest, I am not feeling the price that I paid. The camera is more or less the same and there is nothing that warrants its price literally. Average battery life, average camera, the only good thing is the 120hz screen but its beauty fades away after a day of using it you get used to it.

Being that you tend to keep your phones for awhile I would go with a S20 whatever variant, or wait. 5G isn't ready yet, but in your case I would future proof your phone and have it when it is. I would also go with the newest technology out there now considering technically the s10 is outdated in terms of phones, not saying it's a bad phone, I'm saying you tend to keep your phone's awhile, I would start out with the newest available.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm leaning towards upgrading and getting the S20+, but perhaps delaying until there are some price decreases. Since sales are reportedly lower than the S10, I'm wondering if that will be sooner than later.

With the way things are going in this world with the virus, inventory of the phone could get low. The release date for the note 20 could be delayed. The ultra 512 is still out of stock and projected delivery of them are getting month out. With that said, wait for a better sale, inventory might not support that. For a lot like me, the pre-order was the best your going to see. With the trade in and the promo gift I was about a $1,000 in value there, you're not going to see that again IMO

You and me both! I despised my S7 Edge. I only got it b/c of the Note 7 recall. I lasted less than 2 months on the Edge before I had to get something else.

The sales are lower than the S10, IMO, because everyone with the S10 basically has everything the S20 has to offer unless you're trying to trade your DSLR in for a phone that isn't going to take that great a picture. If 5G and affordable is what you're looking for, why not consider the S10 5G? Reduced price, big battery, still relevant (even compared to the newest S series device), and 5G.

There's more than one reason why S20 sales are lower than S10 sales.

I did say In My Opinion, but sure I see where there could be other reasons. The extra high price of the device, not much in the new category from the previous model, everyone is stuck indoors and afraid to open packages from overseas, people have spent all of their extra money on TP, hand sanitizer and bottled water, people waiting and thinking they will be able to literally just pick one up in the street, parents are broke as they scramble to find child care for the next 3 weeks, people are spending conscious as their job may or has shut down. LOL

I don't see "In My Opinion" but I understood it as your opinion anyway....lol

There's all the other reasons you mention but I think one of the major reasons sales are down is that's just been the trend the last few years because it seems like smart device sales have been declining. I think it's more at the high end because mid range devices still do well globally.

IMO is shorthand for in my opinion.
IMHO is in my humble opinion.
Just FYI.

I was able to pick up a new S10 off of eBay for roughly $500. From the sounds of it you could do that and hold onto it for a few years until 5G became more available. I like to upgrade to the latest phones and am tempted by the S20 BUT I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger since they over-priced it.

Oh and the S7 Edge is a phone I used for a while and is one of my favorite phones of all time if it helps you in your decision.

The S7 edge was one of my most hated phones. My father in law has the S7, that thing is so slow.

So after some research and reflection I'm going to go with the S10+. It will give me more bang for my back and I can wait for the 5G market to mature. Thanks for all the feedback!
