What's getting hot - the screen itself, or the back of the phone? If the latter, it's likely the lower portion, where you hold it - not only is your hand keeping the heat in, that's where the main circuit board is.
I have a shell on mine and don't notice it getting warm often, but it partially depends on your usage pattern - if you're surfing the web or playing games for a long time, of course it's going to get warm: you probably have WiFi or mobile data turned on, the screen is on and the CPU is busy.
All that said, if you're not doing much and the phone is getting hot, then as the previous poster noted, you've probably got a runaway app - at a minimum, restart the phone and see what happens.
