S3 Mini GT-18190L - Adds a Plus Sign ("+") To Each Phone Number in Call Log, Contacts

Help! I'm using an unlocked international version (UK) on the Straight Talk network in the US and can't return a call by tapping a number in the phone Call Log:

the system adds a + sign to the beginning of each phone # and that makes the AT&T network think I'm trying to make an international call, which the annoying operator lady keeps telling me isn't allowed.

I also have to edit all new contacts to remove the + sign.
