I don't consider any phone to be a lambo. There isnt that much of an excitement with the phones today. Maybe when someone creates a phone that I wont get bored with in the first two months ill reconsider

When you consider it, we have an interesting situation right now in the Android world. Key Lime Pie is under two months from being announced(and maybe released), and we can expect a bunch of new features. If Samsung were to delay the release of the S4 to after KLP, then some of the new Samsung-made additions may be included in the new version of Android, so would be downplayed. If Samsung waits, then other phones with the same specs may get released, so it would hurt sales, so that wouldn't be good.

So, the things that are not going to be just a software update would include the new and better screen and size of the device, construction materials improvements(remember the Note 2 had some improvements to build quality as well), and other things that not everyone will care about, such as being able to use the touch screen while wearing gloves. Those of you who don't live in a place that gets snow may not care about that last one, but for those of us who live in a place where gloves ARE needed in the winter, that really is a positive.

CPU/GPU power will always go up with new models year over year, and some of the features really are just software, so I can understand not being too excited by them. Still, there are benefits here. If I were choosing to buy a phone, I would go with the S4, because it will get newer Android versions for an extra year. The S3 is slated to get Key Lime Pie, while the S2 will be limited to 4.2.2. It remains to be seen if Samsung will keep the updates for the S3 going longer due to the 2GB of RAM allowing a larger OS memory footprint.

Another thing to consider is your own personality. Some people like being able to show off their phone to friends or others, while others don't care, and would be satisfied with the S2. I personally have the S3, and since I am still on contract, I would need to wait until this time next year before I could get another phone on contract anyway, so the S5 or Note 3 will probably be my next phone. Other things that go beyond the devices themselves is the huge delay AT&T makes when it comes to phone updates. The S4 will come with Android 4.2.2, while the S3 on AT&T is still at 4.1.1, no sign or word when 4.1.2 or 4.2.1 would be made available, so a big question is how long will AT&T sit on updates before they go out? Will the Note 3 come out with KLP on it before KLP is released by AT&T for the S3 and S4? I honestly am wondering if we will even see 4.1.2 for the S3 before KLP is released for the S4 right now.

While the S4 is and improvement it's still evolutionary not revolutionary, very much in the vein of an Apple 'S' upgrade if you will. There are a few hardware benifits that might be compelling, the IR blaster could be pretty cool, the 'air-touch' also if it doesn't suck. Also realize that if your in the USA you won't be getting the 8 core chip but 'only' a quad core, certainly an upgrade over the S3 but at what cost? Of course Samsung did say that most of these features, as long as there not hardware limited, will be coming to the S3, granted we'll be at the mercy of our carriers but assuming you don't mind flashing a ROM I'm sure that eventually there will be a TW ROM available.

If it were me choosing an S3 or S4? $79 S3 is pretty attractive especially given that the S4 isn't blowing me away. I have the S3 now and my decision is pointed more toward the Note 3/4 when my contract is up.

The GS4 is more than an "S" the upgrade to the GS3. Improvements to existing features, improved hardware including camera better resolution and features with latest OS immediately by upgradable to KLP, and a bigger battery as well as being able to fit a 5" display in the same space as the GS3 and making the GS4 slimmer. iOS hasn't changed much between versions, got a bigger screen and a smaller battery thus making a "revolutionary" the change from the i4s to the i5. I know that the i5 hasn't been been released but you get my point.

To me I'd base my decision on price assuming you can wait until the S4 is available. I can't remember because I wasn't due for an upgrade when the S3 first came out but I think it was originally more than $199 w/ 2 year contract. I know for sure the Note 2 was originally $349 when it first became available. While the S4 has improvements are they features you'd use? The bigger screen is no doubt an advantage but it's not that much bigger. The battery life should be better but right now that's an unknown (and it may not be owing to the larger screen). Personally I wouldn't pay a big price premium for the S4 as you'll only have the phone for 2 years anyway. I'm not familiar with the advantages Key Lime Pie offers but to me the biggest difference after the Jelly Bean upgrade was worse battery life. S3's have been far cheaper than $79, I got mine at Costco for $29 and Sams Club had them for $7.99 (that's not a typo) on Black Friday. In fact AT&T has refurbed S3's for $9.99 right now on their website. With the impending release of the S4 S3's are bound to get cheaper.

The battery life issue that SOME had with the Jelly Bean update is often the result of the screen brightness being higher for the same setting on the brightness slider after the update, or if you have one of the MicroSD issues that causes "Media" to go crazy and suck up a lot of battery use. The whole Google Now system with cards also tends to add some extra load since it triggers all the services needed for cards. It's worth it if you use the cards that show up.

As I mentioned in my somewhat long post, Key Lime Pie being released in a couple of months makes the idea of the S4 being an incremental type of update a difficult thing to say. Other than a huge UI overhaul, what do you expect out of a new phone these days? Larger screen with higher resolution that works while wearing gloves is more of a useful change for those who live in a place that gets snow or cold weather for example. Not needing to touch the screen comes in handy if you are working and your hands are dirty(where you don't want to touch the screen). If you think about it, the iPhone 4s added Siri, but not much else. The S4 adds quite a few new things that may not be all that important overall(playing music while in a group that has multiple devices isn't a feature I ever forsee people using), but there are enough significant improvements. Build quality will also probably be a bit better, even if it isn't one of these unibody designs(which prevents swapping the battery).

So, price premium...$200 with two year contract is what you can expect to pay for the S4, and the S3 will be less expensive because it is last years model.

Now, the real issue that needs to be said again, you should pick the phone that COMES with the software you like. If you hate TouchWiz, to the point where you would throw new firmware on the phone just to get the "plain Android experience", then pick the hardware you want, because you don't care about the software enhancements that Samsung adds to devices to differentiate them. Or, you can wait until the Note 3 comes out since that will be significantly larger than the S4 and will have Key Lime Pie already on it when it comes out.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I went ahead and picked up the S3 for 79 bucks. I really like it so far. I rooted it as soon as I got home and have tried several different roms. I also learned that there will be 2 other lines on our account available for an upgrade in June so I can use one of those if I see that the S4 is that much better. I thought about the Note 2 as well and as sweet as it was I just couldn't see handling the size. I like to use one hand most of the time and the S3 is as far as my hand can stretch.

That I have been a terrible cookie of daughter to him over the years and I can't imagine how that must have felt to him.
