So I've only had my S4 "ACTIVE" for 2 weeks. The other day I left it on the armrest of a plastic outdoor lounge chair and my friend bumped it, knocking the phone to the concrete. A total of maybe 2 feet. This is what happened. I have insurance through AT&T but they said the deductible is $199. THAT'S WHAT I PAID FOR THE PHONE TO BEGIN WITH!!! ATT called Samsung for me and they got turned away. I called again and insisted to speak to supervisor and they called it "misuse." I'm so furious right now!!!

Dude, you dropped the phone yourself....ON a concrete. Why should Samsung paid for it?

The Active is WATER and DUST resistant, not concrete....

While I am very sorry your new phone is damaged, a drop from two feet onto concrete is likely to break quite a few screens, depending on the angle of which it strikes and the force behind the fall. Concrete contains small particles of rock and quartz, which are stronger than glass itself and likely to scratch or damage glass. The s4 active is marketed as "life proof," yes, but not shatter proof. The marketing slur is more angled towards it's water resistance, which has also been spotty at best. The shattered screen is in fact considered user neglect, and therefore will not be replaced by ATT or Samsung. It is your responsibility to replace it through insurance. I suggest next time that you place it on a more solid surface, or perhaps purchase a case and screen protector. The $199 subsidized cost plus the $199 glass repair or phone replacement is still a good $200 or so cheaper than the retail price of the device. It is very unfortunate, but perhaps you should look at it as a lesson learned.

I always cringe when I see new phones without a case. Regardless of it being touted as the "Active", or having insurance....you take your chances by not using a decent case on a 600 dollar device. I also don't think he should make his friend pay for it....it's not like he did it on purpose.
I'm surprised AT&Ts deductible is so expensive.....it's only 100 through Verizon.
Good luck with whatever you decide. It really sucks regardless!

Try calling some of the cell phone repair stores around you, they might be able to replace the screen for less than the deductible.

"Misuse" is an understatement. "Neglect" would have been more accurate. Drop any unprotected smartphone on to concrete and more likely than not, you will see the same results.

Call samsung and ask how much for a screen replacement.

It's about $250... if my S4 GPE (currently at Samsung getting repaired for the same issue) is any indicator. Also note that if you have a third party conduct the screen replacement you will void your manufacturers warranty. Asked about this myself before sending mine in to Sammy a few days ago. Good luck!

I am wondering if you bought it on a credit card and if the card company would cover it under their purchase warranty. Anyone been down this road?

Hypothetically- I wilfully placed my $600 breakable item on a thin (width wise) platform made of light weight and easily moved plastic knowing that if it moved my item would land on the concrete floor. If this actually happened to me I would pay the $199 stupidity tax and be thankful other people, a little less physically reckless than I, are also as financially naive enough to pay insurance premiums so i can get my phone replaced relatively cheaply. And, I definitely would not ask my friend to finance any of it. Bottom line - take it as a learning experience.
