I've seen these two buttons on several S5's but on my Verizon model they are not there.
Not that I even want them, just wondering where they are hiding.

It's a carrier specific thing it's not on my AT&T S5. I was wondering the same thing.

They're both on my Sprint S5 - right underneath the Quick-Setting Toggles.

I didn't see any setting for them in the Notification Panel Settings menu, but they might have toggles for them in the individual S-Finder and Quick Connect Settings Menus. Maybe look in there to turn them on?

He's talking about these oblong buttons. My AT&T does not have them either.

Yeah, apparently only T-Mobile kept those buttons on the notification pull down. Verizon, AT&T and Sprint removed them before releasing the phones.

I'm curious how to remove these buttons from the "shade." Neither of these features is useful to me, and the buttons are annoying since I use a Nexus 7 with a "standard" Android set up. (As a side note, adding garbage that only works with other Samsung devices reeks of Apple-ism.)

Option 1:
If your Android is version 6 or above, you should have the option to change it in the Notification panel settings, found by using 2 fingers to drag the notification bar and pressing the "pencil" icon. Just untick S Finder and Quick Connect.

Option 2: (Advanced! requires rooting which may void your warranty)
1 - Download a file explorer with root capabilities like ES File Explorer.
2 - Open the app, enable root folder access.
3 - Go to "/system/etc/permissions/ "
4 - Find the file "com.sec.feature.findo.xml", and delete it.
5 - Reboot!
6 - You may now proceed to unroot.

Option 3: (Expert! requires rooting and extreme system modification)
You may recompile SystemUI.apk to remove the 2 buttons. More details here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/root-how-to-remove-s-finder-quick-t3161432)

Option 4: (Advanced! requires rooting which may void your warranty)
1. install "ES File Explorer" and enable root explorer.
2. browse to root->system->build.prop
3. open "build.prop" with text-editor and edit the last three letters of this line: "ro.product.name=" (example: "ro.product.name=trltexx" to "ro.product.name=trltvzw")
4. save and restart.
