S6 edge "crashes" after connecting to a VPN

[AC Question]

I'm travelling in China at the moment, and I'm using a VPN to get around the great firewall.

However, everytime I connect to one, it doesn't crash immediately; only two seconds after I open a blocked page such as google or facebook. If I don't navigate to a blocked site, my VPN looks happy. it also seems to be a soft crash; it looks as if the screen turned timeout, and it starts again normally.

My S6 requires manual VPN setup, and my settings are verified by the provider. This also happens regardless of the server I connect to; hong kong, Seoul, LA, manila; everywhere.
