I recently bought an s6 from straight talk at a Walmart i work at. Everything set up easy, as prepaid are meant to. However, I immediately noticed that this phone identifies as a s5 by looking up the imei number. I looked at the hardware with cpu-z and it checks out as an s6 hardware wise. It's OS is 5.0.2.

My question is what could be the cause of this, and should I be worried? Did straight talk refurbish a stolen phone and resell it as new?

I wouldn't trust 3rd party apps for that, not sure how they verify that. But you can check with Samsung when registering your device, THEY I'd trust if they claim the IMEI is from another unit (which I doubt if you got it from a carrier). Even refurb units don't use the pre-existing IMEI and/or MAC Address for WiFi.

I registered with Samsung and it identifies it as a S6, but any device/service I connect it to identifies it as a s5, and imei checking sites seems to think I have a s5 too. Weird.

Also, there are plenty of apps that can check the hardware of your phone, even monitor processor performance and model.

Model reporting is one thing, but the only reliable source for IMEI assignments is the manufacturer. Not sure why other apps are detecting yours as an S5, but obviously that's wrong. S5 and S6 are very different hardware and, like I said, refurb units get a new address (and an S5 board wouldn't fit into an S6; it's cost-prohibitive for Samsung to recycle components other than that).

Right, and the hardware is that of an s6. My only concern is that only Samsung identifies it as an s6. Any other software assumes s5. My old s6 never had this issue.
