Have the phone for 2 months now and the last couple of days the phone starts heating up as soon as the display turns on.

It starts from where the samsung logo is at the front and then starts radiating and propagating all over.

With usage it gets too hot to hold. I measured the phone's temperature to be 80C / 178F using CPU-Z and an infrared thermometer.

Also the phone's display turns black for a split second when switching between apps and that is more frequent as the phone heats up.

I'll take it in for service under warranty but anyone knows what component may be causing this?

If the phone reaches such extreme temperatures isn't the battery susceptible to expanding and possibly creating other issues or even losing its storage capacity?

Thanks for any insight.

That's an extremely high temperature and not good for the internals. Have you recently dropped the phone and/or cracked the screen or back? How about any white spots on the screen from dead pixels? Your best bet is to take it in the the carrier or selling party and have them check it out, if they refuse send it to samsung.

Nothing cracked on the phone and not dropped to my knowledge.
No white spots and no dead pixels. It's in perfect condition.

CPU load according to CPU-Z seems to be sitting comfortably at 4-10% and the GPU load at 0%, yet the phone under no load will easily exceed 50C / 122F if I simply keep the screen on. Temperature falls when the screen times out and turns off.

That seems high to me. My S7 would get hot compared to my S7E but it didn't even get that hot when playing games let alone sitting idle. Maybe use the Samsung + app and contact Samsung to get an opinion or some possible options/fixes from them?

Took the phone in to Samsung's Authorized Service Center. They verified there is a problem with the phone and under warranty they replaced both the main board of the phone and the screen. Hopefully that's the end of it and won't happen again.

I spoke to my carrier's customer service (T-Mobile) about this today and they said that overheating was a known issue with this phone. I have the s7 Edge and I'm returning it today since I had 14 days of buyer's remorse. I had bad overheating, a scratched/peeling home button, and "moisture detected in Usb port", so my phone won't charge wired. Yes, I hit the trifecta all in 10 days of owning it, lol. I would like to go back to S7 Edge, but I would like to wait a couple of months...
