I'm frustrated with this phone! I set an 8-digit pin and use it regularly for a while, then suddenly that same pin I've been using no longer works and I have to do a factory reset to access my phone. I'm not forgetting my PIN, the phone is. This has happened a few times since March. I don't know if this is an Android problem or a Samsung problem. Anyone else experiencing this problem? Any suggestions to fix/prevent?

My "guess" is that you perhaps upgraded to Marshmallow? If so, then your problems could be from that update, as it has caused issue, with many phones. Here are your 2 options, hopefully option 1 works.
1. Enter Recovery and Wipe the Cache Partition, try it out, see if it helps. No data loss.
2. Full Factory Reset ( all data loss, phone as new) but, I recommend this option, after any major update. Back up your device before this.
