S9 won't transfer any files

I am in the process of trying to update my music library on my S9, and any time I attempt to copy files to it, I am unable to because the file manager freezes and crashes each time it is used. I have MTP transfer enabled, along with USB debugging, and it doesn't work. The file managers crash before even being able to attempt copying one file. I have tried multiple wireless file transfers but none of them can transfer the amount of data I want and I am not interested in using them. I shouldn't need an additional piece of software to copy ~20 files.

I am certain this is the fault of the S9, as I have tried this over multiple operating systems and file managers (have tried Chrome OS as well as Nautilus, Nemo, and Konqueror on Linux Mint). Is there any way that I can transfer files over USB or is this simply something the phone can't handle?

Welcome to Android Central! Are you trying to copy to Internal Storage or an SD card that's inserted in the phone?

Have you tried different USB cables? Sometimes a low quality cable (or one that's failing) can cause data transfer errors.

Have you only tried copying music files? What about other kinds of files, like photos or simple text files?

It appears the problem is in fact with the Music folder itself. Making a new folder and then transferring different types of files, including mp3s, was successful. When I attempted to open the Music folder, and then had it load fully without moving anything else in the editor, after a couple minutes I receive the following error:

"Sorry, could not display all the contents of "Music": libmtp error: could not get object handles."

I am not sure what this means personally, but I figured the information may help.

Huh, interesting. Is this the /Music directory that was already on the phone when you first started it?

That's correct, this is the same directory on the phone, unmodified other than other files that were copied to it in the past.

It might be worth erasing everything in that directory, in case there's a corrupt file in there somewhere.

Wiping the directory entirely seemed to do the trick. It'll take a while to get the library back on there, but it's certainly worth the hassle. Thank you for your help!

Apparently that didn't solve the issue because it continually crashes, freezes, and generally refuses to cooperate when moving files. Not sure why this seems to be the case.

Try turning USB debugging off. That really doesn't do anything related to regular file transfers.

It was a thought.

I had turned it on once and it totally broke any file operation over USB. Turned it off and everything worked again.
