Android Central Question

I am not getting any email notifications on my Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017). Using the default Samsung mail app, continuously syncing. Set notifications to be on but they aren't happening. Other apps - text, calls, calendar - are working fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Android Central! Does the email app only show you new emails when you open the app? If so, make sure you don't have Background Data Restriction turned on for it.

All my recent emails are showing up, both new ones and older ones.
I have turned on all the notification options that I can find. What's new today is that for the first time I am getting a sound when I send an email - not sure which setting turned that on! Anyway, I would like the option of getting a notification when emails come in, but so far only silence....

Thanks for the suggestion, but the phone behaves exactly the same in Safe Mode. I get a jingle when I send and email, but no sound or anything else when emails come in.

I have also checked the volume for notifications, which is set to max (one of the three volume sliders....)

Which settings are you referring to?
Seems to me the Samsung mail client shouldn't care about the email address - Gmail, hotmail, whatever?

I misread your problem . Thought you weren't getting your mail. I don't use the Samsung mail app, but you're right it shouldn't matter if your op is correct. To get back on track, have you tried a different sound? Hello may have been silenced or?

Good idea -- when you tap the Sound category and select a different sound, does it play a sample for you?

Do you have multiple email accounts in the Email app? If so, does this issue affect all accounts? If you don't have multiple accounts, see if you can add another one (like an old Yahoo or Hotmail account) and test that out.

Good suggestion. I tried adding another account but the same behaviour happens. No sound or any notification for emails received on either account. It seems to me to be some sort of internal glitch. So I set up the Gmail app instead, and it is working fine. I am now getting notifications for incoming emails using gmail.

As an aside, the reason I was using the Samsung mail app is so I could compress photos before sending them in order to reduce data usage. Can't seem to be able to compress photos using Gmail. Might need another app to do that...

Snapseed can also resize photos (and is a nice photo editor app as well). Since it's directly from Google, you don't have to worry about adware or in-app purchases.
