So Samsung just announced it bought the company that rolled out Viv, which is the same company that created Siri. This video from TechCrunch Disrupt 2016 shows it off in real time (on an iPhone). I was really impressed by the technology, it seems smarter than Google Assistant and is leaps ahead of Siri. Wondering if Samsung will either roll out the S8 with this baked in, or announce it as a coming feature, and how will that impact Google Now (or Assistant is if it widely available early next year to all phones running Nougat). I'm holding onto my 6p and waiting for the S8 announcement, because I think Samsung is going to throw down some crazy **** to compete with the Pixel and the rumored overhaul of the iPhone.

You need to jump to 4:40 in the video to start watching the live demo.

Hold on folks - Samsung has purchased Viv

Just as Google got us excited about the new AI, it was just announced that Samsung purchased Viv. Now if you dont know what viv is, its an AI created by the original creators of siri before they sold it to Apple. A few months ago, the developers exampled viv to us and I've got to say it was incredibly impressive to watch. Look up the video on YouTube BEFORE plucking down your hard earned mooolah for an overpriced, albeit nice, device. Remember, the s8 is only 6 months (if that long) away. The specs alone blow the pixels to smithereens. Imagine it loaded with viv?

Samsung purchased SmartThings over a year ago and it has gone straight downhill since then. What makes you think they will be any more competent with the backend for another acquisition?

No Sammy for me.

Overpriced? You should say the S8 will be over priced as well.

So, the deal isn't final, the S8 is too far along to consider changes and Viv is nowhere near ready for release. This could potentially impact the S9, however it'd have to do so in the context of Viv being an AI assistant programmed for that purpose vs Google's AI being the power of all of their consumer resources integrated with a conversational interfacing apparatus that just happens to be called assistant.

I was excited to hear about Viv back in May, but what they showed was frankly weak and showed a lack of vision. In this transaction, I'm hoping Samsung can bring them up to par on what's possible, but Samsung has been notoriously bad at focus so it'd take a little growing on their part as well.

Finally, in the Samsung announcement, it really does sound like it'll be limited in interaction with Samsung products, which probably means two things: 1 not likely to be on phones first and 2 not likely to be able to fully function in ways that other services, such as Cast, etc can adopt devices that weren't even dreamed up when their platform was originated.

Also, what are the specs of the S8?

The catch is that the voice has a stutter..they are just trying to keep it consistent throughout the phone

Supposed to have 6gigs ram, 256 internal with sd slot, and either Qualcomm 830,or samsung equivalent. They're going for broke. Imagine Viv pre loaded?

I may be alone on this, but I can guarantee that I would actually go out of my way to use an assistant that had a mild stutter. I'm all for it!
