Samsung Custom then turns off on S4. Not sure if phone charging. How to fix?

I am currently unable to boot my device. I have tried holding down the power button, holding down the power button and a volume button, and holding down the power button, volume button, and home button, but have not observed any success. The only I have found to get some display on the screen is to remove the battery and put it back, which results in the screen saying "Samsung Custom" with an unlocked padlock for a second and then turning off.

I am not entirely sure if the phone is charging or not. Plugging in a charger does not result in any indicator light. However, previously, when plugging in, holding down the power button results in the gray battery, which suggested that the battery charge was low. After leaving the phone plugged in for a while, I no longer have this gray battery appear (rather, nothing happens after holding power).

Perhaps of note, in the days before this issue occurred, the phone would randomly turn off, even while it indicated that the battery was well-charged. The phone was working fine before this for at least 1.5 - 2 years. The phone was rooted when I received it.

If you have any suggestions, I'd be glad to read them. Thank you.

The battery may simply be dead or dying. Plug the phone in to charge and leave it off for 4+ hours. It's not unusual for a phone not to readily turn on if the battery is extremely low. If this is the original battery, and it's run for 1.5 - 2 years, it's more than likely time for a new battery.

Thanks for your response. I tried changing the battery, but unfortunately I am still unable to boot my device. Holding down the power button results in that "Samsung Custom" screen again but then the device turns off. I'd be happy to read any further suggestions if you can think of any. Thank you.
