How cool is this? I mostly only use the browser, netflix and youtube so Dex is perfect for my computer needs.

This is the HP X3 lapdock. Originally made for a windows phone, it works pretty well with the Note 9 and the S10. A few quirks, for example the sound does not come out of the laptop and I have to play media on the S10 before Dex starts working.
Overall this is amazing and takes me back to the Atrix days, although much faster with the awesome 855 in the S10.

I can still use the phone while using the lapdock and the phone gets charged while using it.

Make sure to get the right model if you want to try this. There is a huge thread on xda, google "x3 note 9 xda" and you will easily find the thread. I have the US model V8H07UT.

I am using the same Lapdock with the Galaxy S10! I really LOVE the idea of this, I just wish Samsung would make their own version of the lapdock. There are a few needless compatibility issues between the S10 and the HP Lapdock, there is no reason for these issues to exist. I'm not sure where the fault lies in this case (either with HP or Samsung), but in any case a Lapdock that works perfectly with the S10 and Dex would truly be a dream come true! :)

Not knocking DeX. Question. In what way is it better than just screen sharing through hdmi using bluetooth mouse to control phone?

What does it do that is better?

That's cool. A decade ago, Motorola made a similar product to dock with its Droid phone, but that was a joke. Total waste of my money too, haha.

I bought DeX dock for my Note 8. Was still in need of work but promise. Liked it for working with Excel. Office was early supporter.

That was not using a computer. This is whole new level.

DeX is hugely useful. Here is @Office365 running on a touchscreen dock for Samsung Note 9 using Samsung DeX. The touchscreen also allows signature capture capability too.

Looks like Samsung is releasing an update very soon for S10, S9 and S8 DEX compatibility with windows 10 so you can just plug into the PC and Dex will pop up. Like for the Note 10. I am using the HP Lapdock and it works amazingly well. I don't even use a PC anymore. No need to for my purposes. So easy and useful.

They already released it. Might not have rolled out to you, but it comes with the September security patch.

how would the S10 connect to the PC to activate the Dex? through a regular USBA USBC connection?

No need for both, thunderbolt 3 is totally cross compatible. Just get as many thunderbolt 3 ports as possible!

I hated USB-C because I had an old phone at the time with a gazillion and one micro-USB cables, so I dreaded the eventual switch-over.

The frustration is understandable, but micro-USB was a bad design and i was glad to see the back of it!

Over a span of a decade or longer, I must have accumulated a hundred different micro-USB cables of all sizes, brand names and configurations (eg: short, medium, long, extra long length, right angle, left angle, car chargers, coiled, non-coiled, attached to bricks of different voltages, on and on. To this day, I still use micro-USB cables cuz I still have various portable devices that use it for charging (earphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc). Yes, it's a bad design trying to plug the cord into something in the dark, half the time in the wrong direction!
