How do I get the finder widget on the home screen so I can just click the search bar and get the keyboard to pop up so I can search my device?

It appears on the app screen. If I add finder to the home screen, I get the icon, but I want to avoid the extra step of opening the icon first. Is this even possible? I don't see it as a widget option. Thanks in advance.

My phone came Friday but I'm still in the process of setting it up. Beautiful screen.

The search bar that shows up in the Settings menu and in your app drawer only search your system. I haven't seen such a widget. You can add Google search to your home screen, it used to but I don't think it does anymore, search apps, settings and other things on the device as well as online. Now I believe it only searches online.

I guess it depends on what you're using it to search for but Google Assistant will search things on device as well as online. So the Google Search bar widget is not Google Assistant. Well not exactly. If you touch it and type Accessibility Settings it will take to you places online that talk about Accessibility Settings. If you say, Hey Google open accessibility settings, it will open the accessibility settings menu. You can also tell it to open apps, OK Google open Yelp. While they've mostly combined Assistant with Google search, typing triggers a search response and talking triggers an Assistant response. So earlier when you were saying that about the extra step this kind of reduces that step even more... nothing to open, nothing to type, just speak the words and voilà, results.

Again this all comes down to what you are searching for, how comfortable you are talking to your phone (ironic since phones were made to be talked to but you'd be surprised how many people don't want to talk to their devices) and how willing you are to change the way you do something.

I hope I was clear. Let us know what you're using the search for and if this answers your question. Then we can go from there.

Thanks. I want it just to search the system. I'm coming from a blackberry where I could just start typing to search my device and I'm trying to minimize the steps to do that. I want the search that is in the app drawer on the home screen, and all I've been able to put there is the icon that will open the search. I can't figure out how to get the bar to display.

I might be reading your post incorrectly, but swiping up from the home screen gives you a search bar to find things on the phone.

Thanks. I'm still getting used to this phone, but it seems like swiping up will be just as fast for access. On my home screen I was just planning on having the date and time and the search bar for my browser and the finder search for the device. I put actual icons on home screens 2+. I like to see as much as my wall paper on the home screen. This phone is laid out differently than my last, to get to my apps I had to click a button for it, it just didn't come up by swiping, which was confusing at first. Since I can swipe up for it though I removed the button for the apps.

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I'm straight now.
