When you turn on the phone.. It shows the AT&T symbol. It tries to update the phone and it stops at 94% and it says update failed then shuts off. Then it turns back on and does it again. It just keeps doing that over and over. You can go into downloading mode. But not recovery. I'm guessing the last person that had this phone deleted the recovery off of it or it just didn't come with a recovery on it.

The day before.. My friend said that it asked if he wanted to update it and he kept saying remind me later. Then he rooted his phone that night. In the morning he woke up and it was in that cycle of it trying to update. I don't know if the root is what is causing it not to update or what. That would make sense but I don't know.

All it does is that endless cycle or go to downloading mode. I keep looking for roms for this model but I can't find them anywhere.
I also tried flashing a recovery on the phone via Odin but that didn't work either. We are pretty big noobs at this. Maybe he should be more careful next time.

Really stumped on this. Please help us out. Thanks!

You can flash a stock version of Jelly Bean via Odin, then flash a rooted version, then flash a rooted version of Kit Kat, & finally flash a rooted version of Lollipop. Go to XDA & find the post about 'OC6 & Keep Root'. (I can't post links since I registered just to help you out)
