Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge - how to access in app settings...?

I was trying to access in app settings in a checkbook app and I normally would hold the recent apps button but now it just says "can't open split screen" . I realize this function is there for our convenience but I now cannot access the settings in the app to retrieve a back up...any help would be appreciated

Settings - accessibility - dexterity and interaction - assistant menu

You can use the menu key from there.

You can actually just hold down the back/return button and the settings should pop up.

Holding down the back/return button does not work.
I do see the setting pop-up for half a second before it closes.
I had to user the assistant menu to get to the settings

this worked on previous phones even the note7 but now that I have had to get the S7 edge this does not work I can use the assistant menus just fine but when I try to hit "more options" (the key that use to bring up the app menu screen) nothing happens. is there anything I am missing any help would be great thank you
