Samsung Gear S2 and it's ONE HUGE Downside!

(SVoice)

My one and only hope is that the genius community of Android developers and software tweakers can find a way to hack this smartwatch an add in Google's voice search and voice commands feature. C'mon! It's a GOOGLE product! Ah, Samsung. Why you gotta be this way.

As users start to hit the forums and reviews start to come out, we'll see the overall consensus is that the Samsung Gear S2 is a fantastic smartwatch, minus a few software annoyances or limitations. One can hope that it'll be fixed in a future update, but I'd bet small "bugs" might get fixed before you ever see a real update with added features. Perhaps small new features like the ability for the watch to be set for right or left handed users since the screen already rotates on the dock, might be nice for someone like me who wears my watch on my right wrist, but even for this, I won't hold my breath. Much like Sony's popular mirrorless lineup of cameras, you're more likely to see a whole new watch before you ever see updates and new features ADDED to the current watch. Not a bad business model really, but it can be disappointing. Many gripes of early users will be eased as they get to know the watch better, but some issues will never get better and one feature above all will be what gets users returning their watches in under 14 days despite what otherwise is a fantastic step in the right direction for Samsung smartwatch design with a genius, trend-setting feature in the rotating bezel. This one feature is Samsung's own S-Voice. Samsung had the foresight to implement voice actions and voice responses into their watches as the reality of typing on these little screens proves to be very difficult. Unfortunately SVoice is so thoroughly integrated into so many aspects of this watch that the further you dig, and the more you try to use a smartwatch instead of a smartphone in your daily life, the more you'll realize that subbing in any other alternative would be amazing, but it's also very unlikely.

While certainly a better implementation than it is on their Samsung phones, you'd be hard pressed to find a single user who would say it's anywhere close to as fast or as accurate as Google Voice Commands and Voice Searches. Look at any number of forum threads and user reviews, and you'll see that "SVoice is disappointing" is the common "we stand united" sentiment. Not to say the watch is a failure. It's not at all, in fact, it's almost the opposite. But it's one of those things that when people ask you "hey is that an apple watch?" (yes, even though it's round, people will still ask that) you'll be excited to say that it's not, and that in a lot of ways it's a lot better...well, except for one thing. And that's sad. No one goes out and spends $300-$400 on a watch unless they really think it's gonna be awesome. I like many others believe that this watch checked so many "hell yeah" and "finally" boxes on the must have list for smartwatches...it's just unfortunate that a feature - which is arguably more useful on a smartwatch where typing just isn't practical compared to typing on a smartphone - is so disappointing.

Seems like everyone would be happier if Samsung removed S Voice from the S2. I have used it once since release day, it didn't work as expected, and I haven't used it since. Is my keeping the watch dependent on S Voice? Nope. I've had Samsung phones for years and always disabled S Voice, so not using it here is no biggie.
And no there will not be Google Voice on this as this is not a Google product. This is Samsung and Tizen, not Android Wear.
Stop using S Voice and decide if you want to keep the watch or not. Have you raised a complaint to Samsung? If not, and you just return the watch and whine on AC Forums then Samsung will never fix what needs to be fixed.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why does the S Voice on the watch have to be different than S Voice on the phone? Can't they use the same program that the phone uses, or just link the watch to use the phones S Voice capabilities? S Voice on my Galaxy S 5 works great, but S Voice on the watch seems like a totally different program. That doesn't make sense to me???

For the same reason that a copy of Microsoft Word you load on your Windows PC won't work on your Android phone. When a program runs (e.g., Microsoft Word or S Voice), it is executing instructions. Just as and Android phone can't recognize instructions written for a Windows computer, A Tizen watch can't recognize instructions written for an Android phone. The program has to be complete rewritten.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of an android app that hooks into Google search/Google Now, but are there any? Is it an imimpossibly that a third party app could do that, even if Samsung won't?

I don't have an s2 yet so I can't say for sure but can't you just turn on notifications for the Google app in the gear manager app like previous gear models? Then I'm pretty sure you'll start receiving all you google now notifications on the s2? I know it dosent solve the s voice issue but at least you'll be able to get all your Google now notifications and reminders and whatnot...

I have Google app notifications turned on in the Gear App, but am not getting those notifications on my S2.I do get them on my Gear Live, so not sure why not on my S2.

I think it's probably a minority of users who actually talk to their watch anyway, so I don't believe many will be running and screaming to take the S2 back due to S Voice IMO. S Voice may in fact be one huge downside to people who talk to their watch (though I don't think it is that bad at all). I almost never used Google Voice commands with my 360, and never feel the need to talk to my S2 watch now.

So while I can appreciate that this may be an issue for the folks who want to use voice commands, it might be a bit dramatic to characterize what may be a lesser S Voice experience compared to Google Voice commands as a huge disappointment overall.

You may want to check your settings. Once I turned on Google App Notifications I get all types on notifications. (weather, traffic time to home, reminders, etc etc)

I have the Google App and Google Now Launcher notifications turned on in the Gear app, but am not getting those notifications on my S2. Wonder if these only works on Galaxy phones? I have a Nexus 5, and definitely get them on my AW Gear Live.

My point exactly... Seriously Samsung. As they say on NFL football coverage... "c'mon man!"

Yeah, but I'm not going from a PC to a phone, I'm going from one Samsung device to another. The watch can link to notifications, calendar events, and contacts from my phone, couldn't it link to the S Voice and use its functionality? Still makes no sense to me. They were both designed by Samsung. To use your example, One Note works pretty much the same on my phone than on my PC, because it's designed to. S Voice should be ubiquitous across all platforms as well.

wow. this video just made me Not buy the gear s2. I was looking for reviews before hitting the buy button.
I just hit the empty cart button instead...

OneNote on the PC is a COMPLETELY different application than OneNote on the Android phone. It took Microsoft 8 years from launch of OneNote on Windows to develop and launch an Android version. Bottom line: S Voice on the Gear S2 is pretty bad. If they don't fix it soon, they will have pissed off customers. Since they have been making Tizen watches for a while, hopefully they just need to make some tweaks to get it working OK.

After a solid week with my S2, I really like the concept. However, compared to Android Wear, don't like that the ambient screen and regular watch faces don't provide an until-dismisses notifications indicator, am concerned about battery life, think S Voice is seriously inferior, that pedometer is undercounting by about 25%, and really miss triple tap to zoom (poor eyesight).

That being said currently wearing AW watch this morning, and after only a week, it is quite jarring not being able to turn the bezel!

I completely agree with you on that. They need to fix it... And quickly. I have already returned my watch and will repurchase IF they fix it. The sad thing is that the S voice function works better on my first gen gear.

Yeah, it sorta works ok for replying to texts, but ask it "who won the Texas football game yesterday?" vs. asking Google Now. Vastly different experience.

Svoice is sufficient for me on a watch. I have no recognition issues. I guess I don't demand too much from my watch.
