Samsung J3 Emerge is stuck on the "Restoring" screen after a full factory reset. Is this normal?

My Dad factory reset his J3 because it was rebooting randomly and kept whining about space even though he kept erasing apps and only used it for the basics.

After doing the reset, it gave him two options: Restore your apps and data from one of these devices: Galaxy J3 Emerge, last used today"

OR

"Don't restore, set up device without apps and data"

He chose to restore. However, that was almost 8 hours ago and it still says "Restoring". He had a total of 36 apps on there, so it said anyway, and he used other phones for games and everything else. So why is it taking so long?

Is there anything I can have him try?

Thank you for an admirably detailed question, which always makes things easier for members.

It may be that one of the apps to be restored is troublesome, or it may be that there is a hardware problem. If a full reset without restore is acceptable, it may be worth trying that.

Welcome to Android Central! Try forcing a shutdown by pulling the battery, then reinsert the battery and try powering on again. If he gets back to the choices, try starting up as a new phone rather than restoring.
