I saw in some posts that Samsung will use Google Messages as a default messaging application for S22 in the US.

If I used the Samsung Messages app on the previous phone, do I need to switch to Google Messages on the old phone prior to start data transfer via Smart Switch?

No, smart switch will copy the data and it'll appear in Google messages.

The message data is actually stored separately anyway.

From what I saw on a YouTube video, you can still use Samsung messages. It's on the phone, just not set as the default. You can go in and set Samsung messages as your default.
