Android Central Question

I have a Note 10.1 tablet GT-N8010 which has been updated as far as it will go (Android 4.1.2). It's now so far out of date that the Play Store won't even run any more. The tablet works perfectly well but can't update, nor can I install new apps as the Play Store doesn't work. Does this mean the tablet is now useless and destined for the landfill ? Is there no way to remove the existing software and install a generic Android that will let me continue to use the machine ? It seems a shame to throw out a perfectly working machine just because the OS is out of date. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What do you use it for? Does it NEED to be updated ? If you're using it to browse the web and such it's still perfectly good for stuff like that

I would counter that it ISN'T. A device that old is vulnerable to any threats that have released since it was last updated several years ago.

You could install a custom ROM. I'm sure ROM development for that model went to at least Android 6

IMO, Android 6 isn't far enough. I'd want at least 8 or 9 for any kind of compatibility and security.
Each user's needs are different. OP may be willing to sacrifice some compatibility and security if they can at least gain back a functioning Play Store. And I was just guessing at A6 being the final stopping point for ROMs. I haven't actually researched it, so it's totally possible that A7 or A8 ROMs exist

I've still got mine, rarely turn it on because it's so horribly slow it can't handle most apps. Play Store is still functioning but I've got 4.3 or 4.4 installed via a custom ROM over 5 years ago.

Won't even try to browse the web on it, waiting for a web page to load is like watching paint dry.
