Samsung Pay trick with old-style credit-card readers

The laundry card machine in my building is an old-fashioned, clunky swiper, sort of like this (but mounted on the card machine).

For two years, I've had almost no luck getting it to work with Samsung Pay (on my S6 or S8), even when I slide another card through the slot to activate the magnetic reader. Once or twice, it worked, but I could never replicate it.

Until tonight! I realized that the trick is to activate Samsung Pay, then slide it alongside the card reader as you're sliding a "dummy" card through the reader to activate it. When the card and my phone stayed parallel and kept moving, it worked every time.

Anyway, I hope it helps anyone using an old-style reader.

Some people have used this 'trick' on some pay-at-the-pump terminals. In public, it might get you in trouble though, so be careful.

If you have to use a dummy card, why not just use a real card? Seems to me that if have to bring a dummy card to use that defeats the purpose of using samsung pay.

Using samsung pay is safer than a normal card. Plus, we all love the newest "trick" lol

The whole point of using the trick is so you can still get your Samsung Pay reward points, along with your regular credit card points.

This is a 'trick' to make SPay's magnetic strip emulator work with older devices that require an actual swipe to begin reading (unlike the 'newer' ones that are reading as soon as the payment mode is initiated) or on some insert-to-pay readers, as long as said reader is close enough to the edge. The 'dummy' card is just to make the terminal realize there's a card in there and begin reading.

On normal terminals (most of them), you shouldn't have to use this trick and you'd just tap your phone next to the strip reader.

I totally get you. But my point is if you are gonna swipe dummy card you may as well just swipe the real card. Ha ha. So silly.

Yeah, but using the real card you only get your card rewards. Using Samsung Pay, you get your card rewards PLUS Samsung Rewards. And you look cool using a phone :P but mostly for the 'double dipping' on the points. If you use it enough, you can get 10 to 20 bucks a month in gift cards easily.

Well, because you left your cards at home. You never know where you might find a need to use a Samsung Pay but find that you are faced with an old style reader. If in such a situation, use an ID or something to trigger the reader.

In addition to the points and the convenience, there's the security. Between stores having data breaches and undetectable skimmers, I try not to use my physical credit cards at all. (Only carry one.)

Yup, in fact I started a thread on the gas-station trick a few months ago. This is a little different, though. Like the gas-station trick, you have to insert/swipe a card to trigger the reader, but the trick here is to move your phone down the outside of the reader as you're swiping the dummy card. At gas stations, you just need to hold it there.

How would that get you in trouble? You're just getting the system to activated to accept payment via Samsung Pay. You're still actually paying money.

So what you're saying is insert my debit/credit card backwards, remove it, then hold my phone near the reader?

If you're a store/station clerk and you see someone swiping a card and placing phones and matching movements on a payment terminal, would your first thought be 'oh, he's doing the Samsung Pay trick, it's fine!'?

I already got a very agitated Starbucks clerk almost calling the cops on me because I reached behind her screen with my phone to 'hack it and pay'. For coffee. Not even a venti :( How do you think something like this dummy card trick will get people reacting like?

Well maybe before reaching and stuff tell them you're going to use Samsung Pay.
