Samsung Tab 4 10.1 screensaver screen will not respond to 'swipe' to unlock

I am stuck on my screensaver screen with no way to use my tablet. When I try to swipe to unlock the screen, nothing happens. When I depress the power button, i see the the mini menu (power off, airplane mode, restart), but it does not respond to any of my selections. The only thing I can do is depress the power button for 10 seconds and it reboots. Naturally, this just takes me back to the same place.

My scary thoughts are that I might need to do a hard reset but I need to power it off to that and I dont know how to do that from this stuck screen.

Any help appreciated.

Welcome to Android Central! The touchscreen digitizer might be faulty, if it's not responding to any touch at all. Try booting into Safe Mode: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-27814

It's a problem with the touchscreen, then. If you're handy, you could search for a DIY video on YouTube about how to remove the back cover and check the connections. Otherwise, bring it to a repair shop.
