Samsung Trend gt-s7583t on 4.2.2 has no audio when making or receiving calls?

Just got this yesterday.
Installed my usual apps (have had them on at least 5 other phones).
Tried to make calls, shows dialing ...... then times out......
Other people tell me it connects, but it does not show on my phone.

When other people call me it rings and I answer it but there is no audio?

No audio in either case, and the only 'fix' is to pull the phone apart, rip out the sim and battery and reboot it.

Any suggestions?

I can get one or two calls to work after sim ripout, but then it is back to square one.

This is NOT a coverage issue (multiple other phones, same network, working fine).
This is NOT a sim card issue (sim works perfectly in other phones)

Any suggestions as to what it could be? DOA phone? Weird setting somewhere in the menu?

I have already reset the phone back to factory defaults so I am running short on ideas.

I haven't rooted the phone or done anything funky with it like that.

hmmm... once again delete calendar storage on phone, reset phone, starts working again.
hmmmmm.... would like to say it is the phone, but funny that it also started happening on my Google Nexus 7 Tab at the same time.
one of the great mysteries of the universe, but have it going again on phone (for now)
