This is a long shot but here goes. Is there any way to get updates from Samsung instead of through the carrier?

You wouldn't want to apply the unlocked version of an update to a carrier device.
Not sure how you would apply an unlocked update to an unrooted Note 8. I've been a member of XDA long before Android was a thing and this is the first I'm hearing of such a thing. It can be done and there are instructions telling how to do that on the XDA forums. There are questions and answers there on how it affects further updates.

Okay, not sure what I was think. Root isn't needed to update via Odin.
Still, you will not get automatic updates with this.

I would be careful with that. If I remember right the unlocked version of the s8 and s8 plus we're updated after the carrier models. I could be wrong but I remember reading that in those forums.I want updates from Samsung, because security patches and OS updates from carriers can be really slow. I had a Moto G3 that got 1 update then it never had anything ever again.
