With my last SIM card I could save my messages to it (Virgin) however with my new sim card Vodafone I am unable to do this. Is there any way I can over come this. I have messages that my brother has sent me and don't want to loose them.

Couple of options immediately spring to mind.

There's https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&hl=en-US

or
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.fossify.messages&hl=en-US

The former you can schedule automatic - or just manual - backups to your cloud storage of choice (Drive, Dropbox, One Drive) as well as to local storage.

The latter is open source: no ads, no internet, so you can export messages to local storage only. You can then transfer to your external storage of choice beit cloud, USB, PC or whatever.

You don't have to use it as your primary messaging app should you not want to, just switch to it should you need to export any messages as explained above.

The principal is anything which is important to you , never rely on just local storage let alone a SIM card.
