Saving to External SD Card

I just got my HTC Desire 610 phone yesterday. It's OK, but took me forever to set up things the way I like them. It had too much social media stuff on that I never use, but not the things I do use. My BIGGEST PROBLEM is that I can't open files on my External SD Card nor save files to the SD Card. This is a big issue for me. I will not use the Cloud, and I have too many files I want to keep handy to put them on the internal phone drive. There's been a lot of complaints that I've read on various internet posts, and offerings of [partial] solutions, but nothing that works.

I am also VERY disappointed in the camera! I read the reviews before I bought the phone, and some were negative, but it is the same 8 MP as the HTC Vivid I had which took great pictures. The Desire is not true color. I can take a picture and put it right next to the object and they are two different distinct colors. I don't take a lot of pictures, and I have editing software, so I hope I'll be able to make do with the camera in this phone because I sold my regular camera as my Vivid took better pictures than my camera, and after spending half a day or more setting up the phone the way I want it and installing all my own software, I don't feel like sending it back.

But my main issue right now is not being able to open and save to SD Card. Does anyone have any solutions?

It's Android 4 KitKat, not rooted.

Welcome to Android Central! What are you using to try to open or save files to the SD card? Apps need specific SD permissions, so if the app you're using doesn't have that permission, it won't be able to access it. One would hope that the stock file manager would have that permission, but you never know--sometimes people screw up the coding.

If you want a file manager that can access the SD card, try ES File Explorer or Total Commander.

Most apps can create folders on the SD card - and they can only save files to folders they created.

If you want the old way, you have to be rooted (a system file has to be changed) and you can use an app like NextApp SDFix to make the changes for you (it works on Lollipop too).
