Scan NFC Tag while phone is asleep

I know it is possible to have the phone do certain things while asleep like say hi galaxy to wake it with svoice. Is it possible to have it scan nfc tags while asleep with some setting? I saw where on the s4 you had to root the phone to get that benefit and it is probably the same with the note 3 but thought I would check anyway.

I would have thought the phone would need to be awake to use almost any feature. I guess since it was done for the S4 it's possible for the Note 3.
