My S3 screen has begun switching off whenever I dial a call or receive one.
I cannot access the screen number pad, which is a bit of a swine when I call a number with a voice menu.
I then cannot close down the call as the 'end ccall' key is unavailable. The only way that seems to work is to take the battery out.
Sometimes on an incoming call, the screen will come back on when the caller clears, but not always.
This is really odd behaviour and frankly, I'm baffled.

Welcome to Android Central! It sounds like the Proximity Sensor is activating when it shouldn't. Make sure the sensor isn't obscured by anything (like a dirty screen protector, or an ill-fitting case). The sensor is right near the front-facing camera.

Thanks.
Sounds like a plausible answer. Is the sensor the two dots next to the camera lens?
I have cleaned everything, just in case.
However, the problem persists. :(

It's one of those, but I can't be sure which one.

Open the Phone app, tap Menu>Settings, and see if there is anything in the Call Settings related to the proximity sensor. I think some phones have a setting, but it's uncommon.
