Screen brightness is abysmal...

I am honestly shocked at how little maximum brightness actually lights up the screen. WHen comparing the S3 side-by-side with the Droid x using Gmail (white background), the Droid X's screen is SIGNIFICANTLY more bright and white. The S3 looks very dull and gray. I am very dissappointed thus far with the screen. Is there any way to possibly further increase the brightness through rooting or with a third-party app, without damaging the phone? I may end up selling this phone if this cannot be changed, it's ridiculous...

EDIT: I'm finding that with the S3 at max brightness and the DX at 25%, the DX is just as bright as the S3's screen. I am amazed at how much better the DX's screen looks when compared to this "high-quality" screen.

I actually turned the screen brightness down. Idk what people mean when they say it's dim. I have no issues.

compare your model to the store demo, yours might be defective.

I was playing with one in an AT&T store and it had the screen power saving feature on aggressive and the screen was very dim. Once I turned that off it got much better. Also, be sure to turn the auto brightness off in the web browser since it has its own brightness control.

I agree, the auto-brightness is effing terrible. It's not the screen--Samsung just ruined the auto-brightness control.

I have the auto-brightness turned off as well as all the power saving features. It is just very apparent that the screen is lacking a decent amount of back lighting when compared side-by-side with my Droid X. The best I can hope for is that I have a faulty screen I suppose, but I do not believe that is the problem.

the non-verizon GS3s got an update that adds a brightness slider to the notification bar iirc

The reason the DX is brighter is because it's a crapper screen. It needs more light to make up for the screen being not as clear or HD. It's also smaller and made of different material. It may not be as bright as the DX but that's because it doesn't need to be.

I have my S3 set to 15% brightness and it's still crystal clear.

I just received the update and I am on Sprint and there is no brightness slider in the notification bar.

Sent from my white, sexy S3.

I find the screen to be dim aswell..but I would not call it abysmal. And yes Ive shut off the auto brightness and run it at 100% brightness by default.

I wish it was brighter, but Ill still say its the best phone Ive owned.

Also, the Gmail app is gray on the S3. It's at best an off white when looking at an email. But definitely not pure white.

I thought it was fine. I shut off auto brightness and turned it down really low.

I know Samsung can be finicky with the Auto Brightness settings, so I figured I'd just alleviate it that way.

I will say that the screen is much more vibrant on the S3, and it probably takes more to power the display, but I still find that the brightness doesn't go high enough. I took it outside on max brightness and although not impossible to see, it was very difficult to view what was happening on-screen due to the over-powering glare from the sun. My Droid X can be used fairly easily in conditions like today.

Where do I find the browser brightness control ... I thought I was crazy about the change in color on the browser

My friend and I have the same model purchased at the same time from different carriers. He is on Verizon, I am on AT&T. We both upgraded to the most current software version just a month or so ago and I noticed that I lost the ability to control the brightness separately in the default Internet app. He still has the brightness control in his. I stopped into an AT&T store to ask them and they were perplexed. I mentioned that AT&T must have modified the software in some way to restrict that option (accidentaly or intentionally) and she stated that AT&T and doesn't modify the software before it is sent, they get it from Samsung and they pass it along without modification...uh, noooooooo. So anyway, the only way to even see the screen in Internet is to turn auto brightness off (for the phone) and turn it all the way up or turn off power saving mode (which just KILLS my battery). I am hoping for a fix with Jelly Bean (due out November 18th according to AT&T).

I find it hard to believe you want it brighter (except maybe when outside). At 80% brightness, it hurts my eyes.

Like most the only time I need 100 brightness is in direct sunlight on screen and then I can still see it fine, probly better then most. Maybe you do have a bad screen or are using a really crappy screen protector. Mine usually stays at 75% unless i know I will need to extend my battery life for the day.

Even though it was lower resolution, even the screen on the gs2 was much brighter. I do miss that aspect. But Sprint borked that phone with a un-tested ICS update so here I am back with Verizon and a gs3. Lack of brightness in direct sunlight is my only complaint though.
