Screen destroyed, faulty device?

Hey,

I got a Nexus 7 for Christmas and since I've had it, when you press the screen at a certain location it makes a clicking / creaking noise. A few days ago the screen cracked close to the edge, the same place the noise could be heard from. This crack has now turned in to a full-on spider-webby looking smash all up the screen, and the digitizer has completely stopped working for the entire screen. So I'm left now with a brick. I wasn't mistreating the device, this happened during perfectly normal use.

When I go back home (currently live away to study) and I have access to the box with all the necessary codes I need to contact support, I will do so. However, after reading this thread on the Google Product Forums, I've got a really bad feeling about this situation.

Anyone else shipped a faulty N7?
Anyone tried contacting support? What happened?
I'm from the UK btw, and I'm hoping that those posts on the Google Product forum were mostly from US customers, where consumer protection laws are far less prevalent. Think I'll be able to get it replaced/repaired for free? I really hope so, as I am already seriously missing this device and I've only been without it for a few days!

Any help / advice highly appreciated.
Cheers!

Sorry to hear about that. Sounds like it was the old "screen lift" issue. There are many old threads on this forum about that, and if I remember right, some people experienced the same cracked screen problem when pressing down too hard in this screen lift area.

If your N7 was purchased directly from Google, you might have more luck in getting a free exchange, as they have a pretty good record with defective units, and are also aware of this problem. If purchased elsewhere, you'll simply have to deal with Asus, which I've heard is a less pleasant experience. Search the N7 forum for screen lift or cracked screen, and I'm sure you'll find similar experiences.

Thankfully, it was purchased directly from Google.
Your response has made me feel quite hopeful :). Thing is though, after researching the screen lift it would appear that that's the defect my device was shipped with. A little click when pressed on a certain part. However, this is quite a recant batch I would assume. It's the 32gb model with 3G.

Really hope they fix it, I'll have to see next week.

Cheers!

Thankfully it was purchased directly from Google, thanks for restoring my hope :).
Thing is though, I researched the screen lift issue you mentioned and it would seem that that's the defect that my device was shipped with, a little click when you press the part of the screen the crack's emerged from. This is the 32gb 3G device, too. So I really hope they replace/repair it. It's an awesome device apart from that little (or big?) fault, and I can't do without it now I've had one. Haha

Cheers!
