Screen dims in sunlight, but auto brightness is off

Hi all,

I noticed when I am outside in sunlight that my display dims and looks very washed out. If I cover the proximity sensor area almost immediately the brightness returns. I have auto brightness turned off. Why is it doing this? I would assume with my brightness turned all the way up and auto turned off it would stay bright always. When it dims with this washed out look it is VERY hard to see the display in the sun.

Mine does that as well. Not sure why and I haven't figured out how to make it stop.

Frustrating because it should NOT change at all if auto brightness is unchecked...

Seems like a defect. I would contact the manufacturer for a replacement

This issue happened on the AT&T Note 5 I returned due to Carrier IQ and now this is the International Note 5 N920i. They both do the same thing, I don't believe it to be a defect but more of a hopeful software fix...

Auto brightness needs to be checked "on" when outside in the sun. That's why you're having the problem.

This is from an article on this site on the Note 4, but it's the same on the 5 and works perfectly: "It may seem counter intuitive to have Auto Brightness checked when you're outdoors as you'd prefer that the display is always at 100 percent in bright sunlight, but it's best to trust the phone's software in this situation. When you're outside and the sun is hitting the phone directly at a high enough level, the Note 4 will go into a completely maxed out brightness mode — jumping up to 750 nits, over the standard max of 500 nits — to make the screen viewable in even the brightest situations.

This 750 nit brightness mode is so bright and uses so much power that it isn't accessible as a standard mode or setting, so the only way to let it activate is to use Auto Brightness. When it kicks in you'll notice a dramatic increase in brightness on the screen, so much so that the colors on the display also wash out a bit as a side effect. But for most folks that's a worthy trade-off to be able to see the phone without shielding it from the sun."

Interesting.....I'll try it if the sun ever shines here LOL

I keep my phone on auto brightness all the time and it works perfectly. I never used auto brightness on any of my previous Samsungs.
