Android Central Question

As soon as i dial a number -the screen goes blank and i am unable to access / view the screen - till the call is disconnected from the other end

re:

Welcome to Android Central! The proximity sensor is probably activating immediately, which could be due to a screen protector that doesn't have a proper cutout for the sensor, a case that doesn't fit well (i.e., partially covers the sensor), or a faulty sensor.

re:

I had this exact same problem with my Pixel 2 XL. I also could not double tap to wake up the screen. The always on display would go to sleep after a few seconds.

Using a sensor app test from the app store, the proximity sensor of my Pixel was showing something next to the screen even if there was nothing. I removed my screen protector and that did not fix the problem.

From online searches, it seems like a lot of people have been experiencing this problem after going to Oreo 8.1. With no software fix forthcoming, I just did a painless warranty exchange with Google. I put the screen protector from my old phone on my replacement phone. My replacement phone does not exhibit this problem. The only difference between the two phones is that my original phone having this problem was part of the Google Beta program. The replacement phone is not.

The proximity sensor recognises the far -> near transition much more sensitively than near-far. So it goes dark but never comes back.

Removing the gorilla glass screen protector does work for me, but then my screen isn't protected. (D'oh!)

Still, I have a wallet case. If 8.2 doesn't fix it, I'll think about a different solution (such as taking a scalpel to a plastic protector).

And it just worked for me. Has there been a fix pushed?

The glass screen protector that I got at Verizon has a cutout for the speaker and proximity sensor (and front camera) so that's not an issue.
Perhaps you should consider a different design?
