screen "off" question

hello.
i have a curious problem that i hope i can sort through here
i have my "screen of"f set to 30 seconds
however if i use my note 5 and then put it in my shirt pocket with the screen on , the note 5 will just stay with screen on , it will not automatically turn the screen off
if i put the note 5 face down with screen on it will turn screen off in 30 seconds
smart stay is off
"keep screen turned off " does not matter if i have it on or off

so why when i put it in my shirt pocket does screen not time out

When I put mine in my shirt pocket, the screen still detects touches if it's facing towards my body. If I face it the opposite direction it detects nothing and screen times out.

I'm a novice at best with Android (6.0.1) but... under Display, I have a setting which reads "Keep screen turned off".

1) Do you have that setting?
2) Is it On or Off?

Why not just hit the power button to turn screen off, prior to stowing in pocket?
