Screen Quality?

Picked up a MaxxHD at VZ yesterday to replace a Droid X and love the speed, battery life, call quality and overall software experience so far... but the screen is AWFUL!!! The color saturation is comic-book/color xerox-esque in its exaggeration of greens and reds... to the point of being almost unusable... did I get a bad panel or is this just the price of admission with AMOLED screens? I want to get used to it, but its so jarring that I can't imagine I will...

Sounds like a bad device. I would take it back and get another one. This time you should physically examine the device before walking out of the store. If that one doesn't look any better, the maxx may just not be for you.

Sounds like you got a defective piece. I've looked at a few of them and the screen is gorgeous.

Take it to a Verizon store and compare it to a demo unit. Did you not go see one before buying it?

Just another chronic complainer making extreme statements. Ignore.

I came from an NTC Rezound which is known for having a fantastic screen. I haven't been disappointed with the screen on the MAXX HD at all. Mine looks fantastic.

I would prefer cooler white tint. The white is very warm. Key for me is I can see the screen in bright daylight. I could never do that on any other phone.

Yep that Rezound has one of the nicest screens.

I did try a demo phone in the store at night under artificial light... of course I thought it was fine or I would have not made the choice... the VZ guy set up the phone and I did a quick check but I did not run it through a lot as the store was closing... the color issue became apparent the next morning when shooting outside in natural light... I have been trying to get used to it for a couple of days, but its getting more annoying, not less... and I'm coming from being a very happy 3 year user of a Droid X, which had a wonderful camera which I used as a primary casual shooter, so if anything I was prejudiced to like the camera...

The screen is wonderful for text, graphics, videos and gaming, so I doubt its a bad panel... but I just can't believe that this photographic color rendition is considered acceptable for people, even casual shooters... if I do a side by side with my Droid X, a Galaxy, various iPhones and a few other devices friends have lent me to compare it to, the difference is so stark that everyone can see it...

The worst thing is that in all other areas this is by far the best smartphone I've ever used... the software and hardware design and build are fantastic, calls rock solid, speed unbelievable, operation smooth and elegant and the battery life amazing... but the cartoonish turqouise grass and and flaming orange trees are tough to ignore...

Sounds like you have a bad device. Bring it back. Or at least compare it to the demo side by side.

So, the screen is great for EVERYTHING except for the photos you take with the phone itself...

But it's the screen's fault???

Methinks your problem is the camera sensor, not the screen.

Went back to the store... had to escalate to get to the top manager, who was indeed surprised at the blue/green cast on all the Razr/Maxx photos shot with my phone and the store demo phones next to a Galaxy SIII S/A Pentile and an iPhone 5 IPS panel... then out came a Motorola rep who happened to be visiting the store who hemmed and hawed and got VERY embarassed with the drastic differences... he said he was going to find out if there was a manufacturing defect in this batch of phones or if there are issues with the technology...

Its pretty amazing to me that so many people find this appalling quality on a flagship smartphone acceptable, and even praise the screen and camera... I may be a visually aware person who does more photography than some laypeople, but its a pretty simple issue... your technology either renders colors accurately or it doesnt... and its pretty clear that the super amoled/pentile setup along with the onboard camera on the new Razr/Maxx does not come close... folks who are happy with this phone should take another look... mine is going back, but now I don't know what to replace it with... are there no high end Android phones with decent cameras and battery life?

My Intro to Logic professor many years ago would agree with this. Or its the camera software.

Put the brightness at 50%, set a background/wallpaper that is white, and then tell me there isn't a blue tint to the screen when placed beside another device that has a nice screen like the EVO I had. It may appear to look good by itself, but then when it is side by side with another screen it is not even close to good. The images and text are sharp and clear, but the color leaves a lot to be desired.

The parts I bolded are opinion. I used to love LCD screens, now I'm an Amoled fan. I have a Rezound....and I think my RAZR....regular RAZR from last year.... has a better screen based on preference and other things. I see the blue tint on my RAZR, my Droid X1 has a brighter n whiter screen, but I still prefer my RAZR screen.

I will take the pros and cons of Amoled over LCD screens as of now. Granted I have yet to see a One X screen that so many ppl rave about. I actually hate the Rezound screen.....that many ppl raved/rave over.

EDIT: I forgot to add....I just got a Maxx HD 3 days ago.

Yep, the white screen test is a good one... I put a few of the Razr's in the store through that one and all had light to dark blue shadings and streaking, mostly near the edges of the screen... so its the SAMOLED technology, which it seems you either love or hate... obviously most are fine with it or they wouldn't continue to crank these things out...

I'm going to hang onto the phone for another couple of days and see if I can get past the screen issue... the phone otherwise is fantastic and at the end of the day its a... phone ;)

What I said is not opinion whatsoever. White is white. With this screen it isn't.

Re read what I bolded....and my entire post. I never disputed what was or wasnt white. "not even close to good", "but the color leaves a lot to be desired" is strictly opinion. If I cant notice it or notice it as much unless next to another phone like a DX1 or Rezound....it cant be not even close to good. The colors.....that will just be preference. I and many others just like the over saturated colors.

I will even add a few more areas that Amoled screens will irritate ppl: brightness all the way down may make it look green and black splotches on all black screens in certian instances.
