Screen turning black and unresponsive to even the power buttons during calls

I've encountered that issue since the 8.1.0 update on my pixel 2 xl, when I make a call, it is impossible to do anything on my phone until the call is over. Even the power button won't work unless I hold it for over 10 seconds and it restarts the phone. I tried doing a factory reset, but the problem is still there. Anyone knows what to do to solve the problem? Should I just get a new one with warranty?
Thanks.

Did you happen to put a screen protector on it? Some bad ones cover the proximity sensor... That'll cause your issue. The sensor is right below the center of the top speaker.

Otherwise, download a sensor test app and see if the proximity sensor failed. If it is always reporting covered ('Near'), you'll see other issues... AOD won't run either.

I'm getting the same kind of issue (same phone, same OS). I can answer a call, but I'm SOL if I have to push the dialpad or want to go on speaker. Even the call ending via the other party hanging up doesn't let me back into the screen to do things.

Everything thus far points to a screen protector being the issue (like here) but the trick is that I don't have a screen protector or case or what-have-you; my phone is stock out of the box.

Have this issue as well today after running 8.1 update this morning. Only had the phone a week all good until today.

I have a similar issue but it has to do with going to my voicemail from the notification tray and hitting it.my phone goes to my voicemail but the screen turns black.eventually it comes back on by itself but pressing buttons does nothing

You may be able to workaround that by using a third party visual voicemail app. Of course that costs money. The two that I tried both have settings that enable you to tweak the proximit sensors behaviour when checking voicemails. For what it's worth I chose Youmail with the Plus plan at $5 a month

Yes, my son has that through Rogers but the dialing into voicemail should work and not having to resort to adding a additional cost to your monthly bill.i will also point out that I just updated from a nexus 6p running Android 8.1.0 and never experienced this problem on it so it doesn't seem to be a software issue.i was on the phone to Rogers for over 1hr trying different things the *86 plus your password trick and even a factory reset with case off and screen protector off nothing helped.so the phone goes back and I'll be receiving a new one next week and hopefully the problem resolvesitself.thanks for the tip though.

There's an even simpler solution than to remove the glass screen protector - just clean it. It worked for my Pixel 2 regular. Had the same black out issue everyone had after 8.1 (probably a bad proximity sensor calibration), issue resolved by taking off screen protector, but i found that after cleaning the protector and putting it back on, the issue remain resolved.

I'm having the same problem but in my case it's the Incipio screen protector, it's the second one I've tried from them. As soon as I take the screen protector off the proximity sensor works fine.

I solved this by going into the app permissions for Phone and disabling the 'camera' permission.
