Screen: yellow or blue tint?

I got my HTC One X on Friday, been playing with it since then. I've done some reading, and it looks like the screen comes in two "varieties" - yellowish tint or blueish tint.

I have the yellowish tint screen, and it bugs me a bit that pure white backgrounds don't look pure white - they look a bit yellowish. Photos also look a bit "off" in terms of colors.

I heard the blueish tint also looks brighter, but apparently color reproduction is not as accurate (although again, mine seems off with yellowish).

Any thoughts on this? Which screen did you happen to receive?

I've had both but I've ended with the yellow. It wasn't by choice initially but what happened was I took the first handset back because of the WiFi issue I had with it. When I got back to my car with the new handset and switched it on I noticed the yellowy tone straight away and walked straight back to the shop.

The salesman also noticed it (thank god because most of them act stupid and say they can't see anything wrong so they don't have to exchange it) and we compared it to the demo unit.

The demo unit had the 'blue' tint. It was much more pleasing to look at initially. The white is more pronounced and cold as opposed to our warmer yellowy ones. But when looking at textures and colour reproduction closely I preferred what the yellow tint was showing. We also opened a few others to check and strangely what we found was some phones even with the yellow tint weren't as bright as mine or each other. All the blue tint phones looked identical, would love an in depth explanation from HTC how these variances come about when these handsets were from the same assembly line and batch.

At the end of the day It's all down to a matter of preference I think. So I left the shop with mine with the intention of doing a bit of research at home on the screen tints. Generally most others seem to prefer the yellow tint for similar reasons. I was waiting for firmware update 1.29 here in the UK which was supposed to roll out on the 06/05/12 (yesterday) for unbranded handsets.

This update was supposedly going to fix the screen tint issues along with WiFi and others, but alas I'm still waiting for it. I may still go back to the shops and change it for a blue tint phone as the salesman said it wouldn't be a problem to do so.

Try go to any store where they have a demo unit and check it out for yourself and see what you prefer and let me know.

I just noticed (should have earlier!) that brightness has a big effect on this. Mine is set on "auto," which keeps it relatively dim most of the time, making the yellowish tint more pronounced. With brightness above 50%, the whites look very white.

Agree, may be a good idea to drop by the store one more time to do some comparisons.

That thread isn't very long yet....not really any notes to compare to at this point.

Mine is the Sony panel.

It would probably just be poor calibration. Bluer is cooler temp. Yellow is warmer temp. LCDs are usually warmer and yellowish. I'll take warmer over cold blue any day. If you try watching the Simpsons on a colder display like an AMOLED and everyone looks green instead of yellow, that usually seals the deal. Skin tones also look awful with orange/reddish aliens for people. At least that's what I always see.

I have seen both the tones
This is my third replacement. First one had flicker issue but the display was cooler (serial number began with HT23). Second one was warm display Serial number began with HT24. I exclusively requested the O2 shop guy to find HT24 (did a bit of reading before I went to shop) but that had charging issue...loll
The third one which I am using now is again HT23 from same stock but not a cooler display in fact warmer. I think there is no proper way to find out what display is what unless you open a brand new unit.
But certainly like all you have said, the tone is warmer on some devices (i prefer the cooler). If the brightness is turned to full it does take the warmness away but that is certainly not an option since it will drain the battery big style.

After seeing both screens, I would also prefer the blue/cooler model. But the difference is pretty negligible - I am sure you get used to it very quickly.

I must be color blind, because on a pure white web page, the phone is pure WHITE.
No tint.

When you have the two different models next to each other, it's pretty easy to tell the difference. Otherwise it's a little tough. The yellowish tint makes all the colors look a bit warmer though.
