screenshots not working?

I can't take any screenshots. My alcatel one touch evolve (3g) is running 4.1.2. But volume down and power does not work. And all apps say I have tone rooted. And without rooting its the only way volume down and power button. But that never works. It did once by fluke. But it doesn't anymore. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I fixed it. You have to press both volume down and power at exactly the same time. And you have to hold both for 3 seconds. If you hold it down long enough you'll actually see the shot being taken.
