"Searching for service" - turning off cell phone part of S4

I spent the weekend in the mountains of Colorado going in and out of coverage areas. My S4 was constantly beeping as it was "searching for service". I did click on an option not to notify me of this - it stopped the audible alarm but there would be silence when searching for service that interrupted my music player. That was almost as annoying.
So I thought I would just put it in airplane mode, but that didn't work either.
An option to turn off the phone part would be nice, but I couldn't figure out how to do that. Any ideas? Thanks.

Airplane Mode should definitely turn off the cell radio, as well as the wifi and mobile data. You typically can turn wifi back on while on Airplane Mode. But it doesn't make sense that the phone would keep searching for service on Airplane Mode. I wonder if you have an app installed that's constantly trying to wake up the phone to access the internet, but as far as I know, if Airplane Mode is on, it shouldn't give you that alert.

Hey Robert. It's been a while since this happened but I recall a window popped up within seconds of it going in and out of service with the option to silence the notification.
