Not sure it matters, but I am on a Verizon purchased pixel xl 128 black. I am also on verizon for service.

So I have smart lock enabled and currently use the fingerprint scanner as unlock method. I have the face scanner also enabled. Today when I tried to use the fingerprint scanner it didnt work. Once unlocked I could pull down top menu and of course it acknowledged I was trying to unlock the device with my finger print. I tried both hands and each time I did it it pulled up the password to unlock. Now the funny part was that if I just hit the power button, then without fingerprint or face( held it away from my face, I could unlock with a swipe up. So I get that after a restart it requires a password (not sure the reason but understand that it does it) but the phone had not been restarted and would unlock with a swipe.

So without doing anything else I restarted the phone, unlocked with password and relocked. It now works fine. Calling for the fingerprint( lock symbol showing the fingerprint icon, which it was not doing), showing unlocked when my face is present. Now I could be under estimating the speed of the face scanner but that would not explain why the fingerprint wouldn't unlock.

Any thoughts? I know its now all good, but maybe I have something set up wrong and could land back here again.

My only guess is that the phone is having difficulty with all of the security measures you put in place. Is there a reason why you have basically every security option enabled on the phone?

Hm sounds like a hiccup maybe? I would have to try and see if I could mimic the same.

Oh also as for the requiring PIN / password upon boot is common. IIRC all smartphones do this upon first boot.

in reality I only have one security measure enabled. The rest are ways around that measure for my ease of use. So the phone is set to lock (security measure), I use the fingerprint scanner as my main unlock, but when I am in my home wifi no security needed. I also enabled the face recognition, because I am coming from the note7 and liked the iris scanner (I am aware this is not as exact). I also like the ability to unlock the phone without having to pick it up. Like if I am cooking and have dirty hands, I can hit the power button and look at the phone and swipe up to unlock instead of holding the phone to unlock fingerprint. Or at home I can use a knuckle and just swipe.

I mimic it everyday. It happened after waking up, raising the ringer volume, pulling the plug and leave the house. Then the first time I unlock. At first I thought I had some sort of update. I know one is coming, but I checked and havent gotten it yet.

In terms of the boot I know its that way. My n7 was the first fingerprint phone I owned, but have since used the s7e, iphone and not pixel so I get its universal. That comment was more to why? What happens upon boot that is not common at another point? It almost feels like they are not so sure the fingerprint scanner is so secure.
