Seems introductions are in order

I've been directed to "Introduce" myself.

I have an HTC Evo 4G from Sprint. It is currently running the OTA update of Android 2.3.5 with HTC Sense UI and hboot 2.18 under the covers. I had planned on rooting this beast in order to make a few changes, and the phone had been reset at the Sprint store to the base Android 2.3.3/hboot 2.16 that is well understood, but the OTA update was installed in the wee hours of 1/20/2011, so I'm currently awaiting new information and/or updates that will allow me to update this without breaking out too many of my tools. I know of no way to roll back the OTA update to 2.3.3.

As for my background, I'm a fossil. I've been in the computer industry as a full-time professional since 1981, and have called myself a Software Engineer since late 1982. I have written embedded systems for microprocessor based devices from scratch, developed compilers, linkers, debuggers, and other programming tools. I have been part of the core design team for serial video terminals that were sold by the hundreds of thousands back in the 1980s and into the 1990s. I was the chief product architect at a software company for 5 years (I worked there for 10). I developed software for digital cable set-top boxes. I've written factory automation software. I've developed network routers, protocol stacks, and even been key in the design of a unique Ethernet interface for a particular embedded environment.

These days, I am a Software Engineer at a company that specializes in communications and avionics. I can't really say much about what I'm doing these days.

On the other hand, I can say that I've been following the Android ecosystem since before the first droid hit the market. I am impressed with the community, overall, though I find that there are those who look down on people who choose their carrier and then have to go with whatever Android phone the carrier offers, but for the most part, people are quite helpful.

There are some of us who get massive discounts through work. Yes, I have a phone that has a vendor specific skin over top of Android's UI. I didn't have much choice. I only get a new phone every 2 years, and I got my Evo right before the 3D was released. I have a year and a few months before I am eligible for an upgrade.
