Just picked up the Maxx yesterday and need a case. Its a toss up between the active by seidio or the otterbox commuter. Does anyone have the active case yet with the kickstand? I know its fairly new but someone should have it. How do they like it?

I have both the Otterbox Commuter case and the Seidio Active case w/ holster. I bought the Commuter case first because the Active wasn't available. For me, the Commuter case felt slippery in my hands and wasn't a good grip feel for me. And, I love using holsters which the Commuter does not come with one. The Active case is very nice with much better grip. And the holster it comes with is pretty good too. It's very easy to take the phone in and out of the holster one handed. I also have the Otterbox Defender case w/ holster. The rubber material on the Defender case is much more grippy than the Active, but the Active is still way more grippy than the Commuter.

does your active case have the kickstand? if so how do you like it?

Also have you ever pocketed the phone with cases? Which one seems easier to pocket?

I can't speak to Razr Maxx Active cases, but I have two others. Have always very much appreciated the design of Seidio's Active Case, as the silicon inner piece they use is nowhere near as floppy as the one used on most Otterbox Commuter cases. I have used one on my Nexus S for the past 11 months, and it has held up phenomenally, save for some of the paint material wearing off of the silicon portion. I like it so much that I also purchased an Active case with kickstand 2 months ago for the impending Sprint Galaxy Nexus launch. It is the same great quality, and the addition of the kickstand is a nice touch.
I also notice that some other similar cases are not built as intelligently; case in point Incipio Silicrylic. This case has only the top and bottom portions of plastic that hold in the silicon, compared to the 6 point web pattern that Seidio uses. I can't stress how much this prevents unwanted flex in the silicon.
I guess you could say I'm a fan of the Seidio Active.

My active case has the kickstand. It works, but seems a little flimsy. It's a thin piece of metal with a little spring on the end where it attaches to the case. I personally don't use the kickstand very much but it seems to work as advertised.

I do pocket my phone sometimes. If you like to keep your Maxx in your pocket, the Commuter case slides in and out the easiest of the one's I mentioned. It basically slides the best because the plastic case pretty much covers all of the rubberized silicone around the phone.

On a another note. If you want a case that slides in and out of your pocket super easy and is also pretty grippy to hold, get the Cimo S line cases. The diamond grip etching on the sides is very nice.
DROID RAZR MAXX : Motorola : Cimo Technologies

I have tried lots of cases. I also have the Seidio Surface case w/ holster. I have the Verizon TPU case, the Verizon shell holster combo, a generic TPU case off of ebay, and a couple rubberized plastic snap cases. If you have any questions about those, I can help. :)

How well does the surface case snap together. I had a surface case for my iPhone 4s and if was always loose when snapped together. Seidio has the best holsters.

My surface case snaps together very well. And its easy to take apart if u need to change out cases. I've never had it come apart by accident.

Between the surface case and the active what is your preference. I am afraid the active will just too much bulk. How do they compare protection wise?

I personally like the Active case better. It's got the rubber sides which offer good grip without too much bulk. The Surface case is nice, but it's a tad more slippery than the active. It's got a nice soft rubbery feel over plastic, but it's still not as good to hold as the Active in my opinion. But if you want a thin case without any bulk, the Surface case is a good choice.

The Active case protects the phone pretty well. It has two layers, the rubber silicone goes over the phone and then the 6 point spider shell goes over the rubber silicone. Since 4 of the 6 points cover the corners, it's got pretty good protection from drops. The Surface case still protects, but it's basically a thin layer of plastic which offers little shock absorption.

If you want the piece of mind of protection and if you occasionally drop your Maxx, then go with the Active. It's really not that bulky in my opinion. Definitely not as bulky as the Otterbox Defender case. But if you want minimal bulk with some protection and an awesome holster, go with the Surface.

When it comes to protection, which of the above mentioned cases would be best?

When it come to protection it seems the Otterbox Defender is the best. But also adds bulk to the phone. Then probably the Commuter and the Active case. All 3 have a shock absorbing layer

Another observation I forgot to mention is that the Active case has the rubber silicone over the power and volume buttons making it very easy and user friendly to push them. The Surface case has cut outs so you are pushing the actual power and volume buttons, which can be difficult sometimes due to them being a little recessed in from the case edge.

thanks for the detailed input. I am leaning towards the active. How easy is it to remove? I have a verizon blue tpu for when I carry it in my pocket so I would sometimes want to change covers.

The Active case is very easy to put on and take off. Actually, all of the Seidio cases are some of the easiest cases to install and remove that I've found. I like to switch out my cases all the time too, depending on what I'm doing.

You're welcome. I'm sure the Active case will suit you just fine. I love it. Definitely the best case for me and I've tried just about every one.
