I really thought this would be easy. But alas. Im trying to help a non-profit with spreading the word about an affiliate program they have. We can easily create a linked icon on their or my phone that has the correct url embedded, but we have searched all over trying to find a way to simple share that icon, with the link, to other phone users in their organization.

So to be clear the icon is not an app perse', we have seen app sharing apps, its just an icon on their home screen.

The challenge is to get this icon, with the link on all their members phones. Lets start with the droid ones huh.. ha.

So Ive spent the last two days trying to find a solution. The only way seems to be sending each user a tutorial on how to add a link on their home screen to a website. Surely there is an easier way....surely... ;)

Thanks in advance.

Desktop icons are usually setup by using an installer program (APK file).

While I have not used any of them, there are apps available that will create desktop shortcuts for URLs. However, I doubt there is a way to automate that process.

Welcome to the forums! I'm with ManiacJoe, I doubt there's an easy way to automate the process. Those URL shortcuts are not 'generic' and belong to the browser app that create them. And people that receive the link could be using a different browser that the person that sent it.

I think the best way could be sharing the link and including that little tutorial you mentioned (click on the link - three dots in the browser - add to home screen).

Thanks so much guys...yes i forgot about the browser being the generator of the link and icon. ...does seem like there should be a 'generic' way dont you think?. Maybe a project for those more techy out there than me. Back to the tutorial development....ugh... ;)

Cheers

You can create kind of generic URL shortcuts using apps like More Shortcuts, but this doesn't solve your issue. These shortcuts would work only on your phone. I think the difficult step in what you're trying to do is sharing an already done shortcut and make the receiving device to create a home screen shortcut from your link/code.
