Sense vs. No Sense

Since this is my first Android deivce, and I only started out playing with the D-Inc and EVO4, Sense is all I know.

Seeing some of these ROMs without sense, does anyone have examples and possible screenshots of what something without Sense might look like?

without sense is just bone stock froyo or with a gingerbread theme. Nothing special.

Sense is HTCs oh-so-ugly theme added to your phone. Everything from the lock screen, keyboard, icons, and bloatware are sense themed.

In my honest opinion, its the worst of all hardware providers themes. MOTO blur isn't great either.

Why they don't leave it stock is beyond me, selfish branding I guess.

Sent from my HTC Thunderbolt using Tapatalk. Eat Snacky Smores.

Sense isn't bad, but I'm kind of upset that in the Slate skin, the call screen is curved unlike the homescreen which is squared. Attention to detail is lacking.

Do you guys have any examples of what stock android looks like? Besides look and feel, what else does sense provide?

Each manufacturer is able to put their own "theme" or touches on the android program. Sense is just that for HTC. What I consider to be the biggest part of Sense is the Rosie and the widgets.

With no added "theme" from a manufacturer, the os is pure android, which is commonly called vanilla or aosp (android open source project).

Personally, I like sense for the widgets. and IMHO, Launcher Pro, which is one of the most used after market launchers, contains a good many similarities to sense.

And choice and options are a good thing :D

I hope this helps

Ok, again, I know what sense is. I just don't know what the visual differences are between with and without. Again, does anyone have any screenshots?

No one really pays attention to post count here...thanks for the passive aggressive contribution.

I'm being aggressive? And how exactly did you deduce that I am worried about post count?

Everyone that posted was attempting to answer your original question. Each time you responded, you did so with attitude. Sorry, but your response after my initial attempt to help is just a sign of wanting others to do things for you. I spent all of 30 seconds googling the term AOSP screenshots and viola...

I am here to help, when I can. I do not respond when I can't help. And if I do and I am wrong, I will say so. Instead, I read and I search so that I might improve my knowledge and be able to help more in the future. That is what I believe these forums are for. They are not to get others to do everything for you.

And you need not worry about future "passive agressive" responses from me. I will go out of my way to avoid your questions...

I'm definitely not here to argue, so I'll put that fire out now. I Google before I create any threads or ask questions...it's much easier to get my answers in search results than waiting for Tapatalk notifications. But while I saw the asop rom mentioned above, I didn't assume that and the others were non-sense (no pun intended) roms.

Searching for what I want to "not see" (sense ui) hasn't yielded the results I wanted, and since I didn't really know how to word what I do want to see, I figured I would ask for a couple screenshots.

I'm going to root in a couple days, and while I don't need to choose a rom at that point, I think my first step is to decide whether i want a custom rom that has sense of not. I see a lot of people talking negative about sense, and I kinda like it. But then again, I don't really know what a custom rom designed by someone who seemingly had a way to build the ui better than sense might be like.

So again, I know what I don't want in this search, but not necessarily what I do want. In searches of this topic, it's looking like Tesla coil, and maybe asop are some of the very few, if not only nonsense roms. I guess I'll just move onto investigating the few popular roms and comparing the features.

There really isn't anything "better" then sense. There are other launchers that people prefer over sense. There are many different launchers one can use, what people choose to use doesn't make it better, but more suited for that person in terms of taste and how they wish to use their phone. The argument over what launcher is better is older even then the old "KDE vs GNOME" argument over which GUI is best on *nix based systems. So in regards to what one you should use, it's all up to personal taste. Also, remember that you can install any of the other available launchers on your phone even if your phone still has sense on it.

Not looking to argue either.

I personally prefer the Sense ui. I know there are those out there that hate it. I like it most for the widgets.

As far as ROM's, I have run Perfect Storm by chingy51o. To the best of my knowledge, he does not have a "de-sense" option yet but I believe he has said he will. I am currently running das bamf by adrynalyne and thatdudebutch. I am running the remix which has some custom theming. They do have a "de-sense" option for theirs.

I would suggest trying one of these once rooted. I have run "de-sensed" ROMs in the past and I always end up missing the sense widgets.

Biggest differences visually are the lack of rosie and the widgets, IMO. The argument is that these things are bloat, just like the VZW apps they push on us. I don't see it that way.

If you are anything like me, once rooted, I was flashing a different ROM each day. It took about a month or two but I have finally quit flashing so often and the ROM I use as my daily driver is das bamf with sense.

Good luck in your decision

I am partial to NON-Sense UI, but the parts of sense I so like are the dialer, and widgets. I generally only get HTC phones cuz of easy ROOT and great hardware :) I have a rooted Dinc w/ CM7 and a stock TB (not rooting just yet)... when I do root the TB, it will be after the OTA GB update then I will Root to remove the bloat, chuck in a nice kernel to underclock, and use my good ole ADW EX to finish it off for looks. OR maybe by then CM will have 8.x on the move ;) any ways.... here is a screenshot of a ROOTED htc phone with NO sense... IT is running ADW EX w/ CM7 ROM... I hope this gives you a better Idea... and you don't need to root to get rid of sense and if you miss it you can always stop using a launcher and go back to sense. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR JOURNEY!!!

Thanks everyone...it sucks being a noob at something when I'm so anal-retentive and OCD. I guess I really don't have to be so clear cut with this decision since I'll be able to switch roms so easily, but I'll be more comfortable with that when I see how efficiently I can backup my settings and apps and restore after each rom flash. It somewhat baffles me when some of you mention flashing roms on a daily basis.

knock on wood
since I'll be able to switch roms so easily
... Just sayin ;)

And I agree with you about people Flashing a completely different ROM daily... I tend to find one or two I like and switch up among them :) but not daily

LOL...well that's only because I see others changing roms so much. But with my simi folder structure so easily backed up now, along with how I view titanium backup's usefulness in getting me back to my pre-flash state, I'm starting to see that.

sense isn't bad but messaging app is hands down the worst app ever. I hate the dialer, pure stupid design by HTC, why do I have to bring the number pad down, I dont know why HTC thinks they need to improve on the tabbed design of android. Why not just keep that so you can go to contacts, recent calls, and stuff with one touch.

I cant wait until pure stock rom, I am using tesla coil and hope they come out with full senseless version soon.
